EYE CLINIC RECEIVES HUGE RESPONSE

Tears rolled down the cheeks of a young Ugandan woman, recently fitted with prescription glasses, as she nodded her head in agreement with eye clinic volunteer Lyn Waughs statement, "Now you will be able to see your children through the window playing outside." In dawning realization, Lyn admitted, "I knew in that moment she had never been able to see [her children from a distance] before." During the CCA East Africa Pastors and Leaders Conference, an 11-member team from Calvary Chapel Stone Mountain (CCSM) in Lilburn, GA, ministered to roughly 100 people each day during the three-day conference, handing out over 180 prescription eyeglasses and about 200 reading glasses. A local pastor joked, "Now I can see who's sleeping in the congregation!" After putting on his glasses, another man said, "It looks like Heaven!" A young woman ex- citedly jumped up and down, exclaiming, "I can see! I can see!" after looking through her new lenses. "It was packed from the time we opened at 9 a.m. until we closed at 6 p.m.," noted Assistant Pastor James Chapman.

REPORT OF VISUAL CAMPAIGN IN SAN JOSE DE SISA

On Saturday, March 2nd, 2024, Dunamis Church and I traveled to San Jose De Sisa. We departed around 5:30 am and arrived around 7:30 am. A local family kindly invited us to share breakfast with them, and by 8 am, we began conducting visual assessments for those waiting in line. Meanwhile, leaders from Dunamis Church were sharing the gospel with the community members.

Throughout the day, we assisted a total of 90 people of varying ages, providing 27 individuals with distance glasses and 48 with reading glasses. Our activities concluded around 7:15 pm, marking a successful day. Meanwhile, Dunamis Church leaders continued with an evangelism campaign for the local community. Around 8 pm, I returned to Tarapoto and arrived around 9:30 pm.

This is Didier. He had worn glasses since he was a teenager, but he stopped wearing them because his parents couldn't afford to buy him new ones. For around 7 years, he didn't have glasses due to financial constraints. However, that day, we found his eye prescription. When we tested him, he exclaimed, 'Wow, now I can see clearly again. Thank you so much, and God bless you!' He was incredibly happy and grateful for the help with the glasses.

SUCCESS IN BRAZIL

Partnership at the base of the pyramid across faith communities, universities, and relief and development organizations are one of the most important collaborations to getting eye healthcare to the 2.5 billion people who have no access to optometry services. Greg Wiens, the Program Director for Global Vision 2020, will be attending the International Mennonite Brethren Conference (ICOMB) Malawi June 4-10.

This comes on the heels of Greg and Marco Soares’s successful trip to Brazil in April, where Global Vision 2020 was successfully registered as a non-profit in Brazil in partnership with the Brazil Mennonite Brethren Churches. Marco (age 19) will be attending HULT School of Business at the London Campus starting in September on a full scholarship. Marco will be applying for the HULT Prize (https://www.hultprize.org) social entrepreneurship endeavor in the fall of 2024.

Marco recently won the Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneur of the Year in Canada and has big dreams of helping not only his home country of Brazil but also the Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa (Angola and Mozambique) in getting affordable glasses to the poorest of the poor.

During this trip Greg trained local teachers and health care providers and Marco met with government officials. The end result was a core team of workers trained to distribute glasses and a fully licensed program that is now in the beginning stages of partnering with local universities, hospitals, and optometrists. Giving credit where credit is due, it was because of Marco’s hard work that this has all come together. The work there has just begun, but we now have a firm foundation to build on in the Portuguese-speaking world.
